In one minute
There is no single style score for good writing. A useful draft does its intended job for its reader: it makes the important thing clear enough, in a shape and voice that suit the situation. Clarity, structure, evidence, specificity and voice matter in different proportions for different work.
Why it matters
Advice becomes misleading when a local technique is treated as a universal definition of quality. Short sentences can clarify a procedure and flatten a comic voice. Dense detail can burden an executive brief and make a fictional world convincing.
A better question is functional: what should this reader understand, feel, believe or be able to do after this passage? Revision can then test the draft against that purpose rather than against a generic ideal of “better prose”.
See it
Make this paragraph more engaging and professional.
The reader needs to understand why the launch date moved, trust the evidence, and know which decision is needed by Friday.
The second version defines the job. Once the job is visible, useful revision choices become much easier to judge.
Try it
Before revising a page, finish this sentence: “After reading this, I want this reader to…”. Then change only what helps that outcome or deliberately changes it.
When not to use it
Not every piece begins with a fixed purpose. Exploratory drafting, discovery writing and experimental fiction may need room to find their job after the words exist. Do not force an early draft to justify itself too soon.
How SeamWriter notices it
SeamWriter can point to local signals such as unclear structure, unsupported claims, generic wording or a scene that does not change conditions. It cannot calculate whether a work is “good”, infer your final artistic intention, or collapse those signals into a meaningful quality score.
For different writers
- Writing fiction
- For fiction, include the reader experience in the job: tension, surprise, intimacy, unease, recognition. A clear sentence is not automatically the right sentence if confusion is the intended experience.
- Writing professionally
- For professional work, define the reader and the decision, understanding or action the document must support. “Professional” is not a tone; it is fitness for that job.
- Learning to write
- Ask what the assignment is really asking you to show. Improvement means making your own thinking easier to see, not making your writing sound more adult or more like an AI.
